Contra-indications
There are several conditions when massage is totally contra-indicated. Massage should not be performed at all if you:
- have a fever, flu or temperature
- have a contagious and infectious skin conditions and diseases
- have diarrhoea or vomiting
- are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
The following conditions require medical approval with written consent from your doctor:
- Heart or circulatory conditions, high or low blood pressure
- Arthritis
- Slipped disc, whiplash, pain or postural deformities
- Cancer
- Osteoporosis
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- Kidney infections/disorders OR any other ailments of the internal organs
- Nervous or psychotic conditions, epilepsy
- Recent operation
- Diabetes
- Bells Palsy
- Trapped, pinched or inflamed nerves
- Acute rheumatism
- Condition being treated by a GP or another Complementary Practitioner
Local contra-indications.
Massage can be performed but the following area should be avoided:
- Bruising, inflammation, pain, cuts, abrasions, sunburns, scar tissue, tenderness, oedema,
allergies, skin sensitivities, excessive sweating, hernia,
- Recent fractures, strains or sprains
- Major or minor surgery (within the last 18 months)
- Areas of localised contagious skin disorders (verucca, athletes foot, psoriasis, eczema,
dermatitis)
- Varicose veins
- Recent fractures (minimum 3 months)
- The abdomen during the first 3 months of pregnancy
